School Visits

When I visit schools, I give two informal, interactive 45 minute slide show presentations about the writing process, the illustration process, the importance of feedback and revision, the different kinds of books that I've created, and my experiences as an author/illustrator.  My presentation is appropriate for grades K-6, but please mix K's in with other primary grades so they benefit from the older children's behavior and questions.  I can present to any size group as long as I have a good old-fashioned Kodak Carousel slide projector with remote control (sorry-I don't use Power Point), a large screen, and a microphone. preferably cordless so I can walk around.  I usually present to grades K-3 and then to grades 4-6 first thing in the morning, and then I autograph books.  Because I only do two presentations, I only charge $1000.

My goals are: (1) to make kids feel proud of themselves as authors and illustrators, (2) to help them understand that being an author/illustrator requires practice and revision in order to communicate well, and (3) to make a personal author-to-author connection with them that inspires them to read and write more than ever.

The success of my visit depends on the school staff. I gratefully ask teachers to have the children actively study my work before my visit to your school. I have written over 100 books, appropriate for children in grades K-6.   If you decide to have me visit your school, bookseller Betsy Polivy will lend you multiple sets of my books (all covered in my Teachers' Guide).  Please share the books with children and teachers, including the music, art, and reading teachers.  The Teachers' Guide suggests enjoyable study activities for different grades.

Book Sales:

I have found that my visits are most meaningful to children if they can purchase copies of my books.  Since I have different publishers, ordering books can be difficult, so I have arranged for the highly experienced children's bookseller and author appearance arranger Betsy Polivy (914) 683-5354 (ebp1214@aol.com) to do this for you.  Betsy will send you a letter of confirmation, a checklist for author visit day, my author bio, send-home information about me, and a book order form for parents.  She will arrange the shipping of books to your school.

Your school will receive 20% of the book sales.  Some schools use this profit to lower prices and/or to purchase multiple copies of the book for the library so that all children in your school have access to my books, whether they buy one or not.
