Help Me Learn Subtraction

I wrote Help Me Learn Subtraction to help kindergartners and first graders learn through play that subtraction is a take-away action. It's the opposite of addition. Kids can have fun learning subtraction (and addition) while playing with toys. Chad Phillips, the photographer, has beautifully illustrated how subtraction stories can be presented in dramatic play. My rhymes can be adapted by children to work with toys they have at home or in school. For example, "Seven minus two equals five who like to dive." Children can set this up with play figures and also learn to write the sentence in a mathematical equation: "7 - 2 = 5."
