Here is a teaching idea from Mike Brown, 4th grade teacher, Bowers School, Manchester, CT

"Children in upper elementary grades can use Jean Marzollo's sports books as a powerful learning tool. These books can be used very effectively in writing instruction as a model of good writing. In my classroom students read Soccer Sam and Baseball Brothers. We explored the use of play-by play action, characters' thinking, themes of challenge and sportsmanship, and other aspects of the author's craft evident in the text. Students then created their own sports stories in our writers workshop."
